Members of the NKU athletics department visited Newport Intermediate on Tuesday as part of the Adopt-A-Class program, a non-profit organization dedicated to pairing classrooms in underserved urban schools with area businesses and community groups.

“We are very pleased with the opportunity to work with the students and teachers at Newport Intermediate School,” NKU director of athletics Dr. Scott Eaton said. “Northern Kentucky University is committed to community engagement, and the Adopt-A-Class program gives our student-athletes and coaches a chance to make an impact on the kids in Newport. Principal Josh Jackson and the staff at Newport Intermediate have been great to work with in forming this partnership, and I believe this initiative is going to make for a positive experience for everyone involved.”

Courtney Poetter, the family resource center coordinator for Newport Intermediate, agreed with Eaton's assessment of the partnership with NKU's athletics department.

“The students and staff here at Newport Intermediate School are looking forward to working in partnership with the NKU athletics department for the Adopt-A-Class program,” Poetter said. “We, along with NKU athletics, both set high standards and expectations for our students. Our hope in this partnership is for our students to be exposed to positive role models who care about education, and inspire them to strive for success.”

Since 2003, Adopt-A-Class and its adopter partners have enriched the lives of students living in poverty by providing resources, classroom support, and special events and activities. The Adopt-A-Class mission is to provide positive role models who will help develop practical and social skills for students. Adopt-A-Class has a network of more than 170 business and community groups currently partnering with 17 schools in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

“As you make your way through the main doors of Newport Intermediate School, you can see immediately that NKU athletics has already made a positive presence in our school,” Poetter said. “We have a large, full-color banner and several trophies showcasing our partnership with NKU athletics through the Adopt-A-Class program. The banner hangs as a reminder to our students how important it is to have dreams, be committed, take responsibility and strive for academic success.”
