NKU softball combines strong pitching, clutch hitting in doubleheader sweep of Maryville

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Jessica Farris lined a run-scoring single to left field with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Northern Kentucky University softball team a 3-2 victory against Maryville on Saturday, capping a doubleheader sweep for the Norse.

April Ehlers began the inning by reaching on an error by Maryville third baseman Molli Updegraff and advanced to second base on the errant throw. After Samantha Smith struck out attempting to bunt, Farris stepped to the plate and fell behind 0-2 against Maryville pitcher Caitlin McClintock.

Farris lined McClintock's next delivery into left field for a single, driving in Ehlers with the winning run. Farris went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in for NKU, which rallied from an early 2-0 deficit with single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings.

With NKU trailing 2-1, Gretchen Lorenz had tied the game at 2-all in the bottom of the sixth by launching a run-scoring double to left-center field to plate Ashley Gates.

Freshman pitcher Emily Schwaeble struck out 10 batters and collected the win for NKU. The Norse improved to 11-8 overall, 5-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

In the opener, Ehlers tossed a two-hitter and struck out 10 batters as NKU posted s 1-0 win. NKU pushed across the game's only run in the fifth inning on an RBI grounder to shortstop by Rose Broderick.

That was all Ehlers needed, as the junior pitcher notched her third shutout of the season and improved to 6-5. Schwaeble led the NKU offense with two hits.

Maryville dropped to 7-16 overall. The Saints are 0-8 in the GLVC.

NKU returns to action Sunday against Missouri-St. Louis at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field. The start of that doubleheader has been moved to 10 a.m. due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday.
