ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –
Jason Cisper went 4-for-8 on the day to help the Northern Kentucky University baseball team salvage a doubleheader split against Henderson State on Saturday.
Henderson State took Game 1 by a 4-2 margin while NKU won the nightcap, 7-4.
Cisper extended his hitting streak to 32 games while
Shannon McCormick and
Jeff Bohlen each had three runs batted in, helping the Norse move to 5-3 on the season.
Game 1 saw the Norse strike first in the top of the second inning, scoring on a Cisper double that plated McCormick, who singled to open the frame.
The Reddies fired back in the fifth inning, taking advantage of back-to-back hits to open the frame and a passed ball later in the stanza to score three runs and take the lead. Kendal Norman gave the Reddies an insurance run in the seventh inning, launching a home run over the centerfield wall.
The Norse fought back in the top of the ninth inning, putting a run across on a
Patrick Muth single. The rally ended in heartbreak fashion, however, as Bohlen, representing the go-ahead run, grounded into a double play to end the game.
Dave Middendorf (2-1) pitched a solid game, giving up two earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in a hard-luck loss. Cisper was 2-for-5 with an RBI on the game while McCormick went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Evan McDole added a pair of doubles in a 2-for-3 game.
NKU once again drew first blood in Game 2, this time plating five runs in the top of the third inning thanks to a two-run Bohlen single and a three-run McCormick double, both coming with two outs in the inning.
The Reddies scrapped their way back into the game, scoring runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to draw within two runs. The Norse put their foot back on the gas in the top of the seventh inning, with Muth and Bohlen each driving in runs to pad the Norse lead.
Ryan Schmidt (2-1) got the win, scattering five hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Kevin Jordan struck out four batters in the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his second save of the season.
NKU and Henderson State will play the rubber game of their series on Sunday afternoon, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern.
