Cisper helps NKU steal GLVC victory against UW-Parkside, Norse sweep past Rangers

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Jason Cisper and Bryan Rose combined for seven runs and six stolen bases as Northern Kentucky University sprinted to a 10-4 win against Wisconsin-Parkside in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.

NKU completed the doubleheader sweep with a 12-6 victory over the Rangers in the nightcap. The Norse extended their winning streak to seven and improved to 28-11 overall, 15-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. NKU is in sole possession of first place in the GLVC East Division standings.

Cisper stole four bases and scored four times in the opener for NKU, which swiped nine bases as a team. Rose added a pair of steals and scored three runs for the Norse, who rallied from a 3-2 deficit with a four-run third inning. Shannon McCormick's two-run double was the big hit in that inning.

Evan McDole drove in four runs during the opener for NKU, while teammate Pat Muth was 2-for-4 and scored twice. NKU starter Josh Blaum went five innings and struck out four batters to earn the win.

Cisper, who upped his team-leading stolen base count to 25 with the four thefts, also tied the NKU single-season record with his 22nd double in the first game. Cisper currently shares the record with Pat Eschan, who hit 22 doubles in 2002.

In the nightcap, NKU wrapped up the sweep of the four-game series behind an 18-hit attack. Jeff Bohlen went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in, while Joe Mack was 3-for-5 with three RBI.

Cisper and Rose had run-scoring singles in the fourth inning as NKU turned a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead. Bohlen's run-scoring double in the fifth inning extended NKU's advantage to 6-3. The next inning, Mack smacked a two-run double that gave the Norse a comfortable 8-3 lead.

Larry Pempek added two hits and scored three runs in the nightcap, and Derek Jones collected three sacrifice flies. Jarrett Casey went six innings and notched the win for NKU. Blake Bagshaw went the final three innings and recorded his first save.

Cisper, Rose and Muth each finished with two hits in the second game for NKU, which gave head coach Todd Asalon his 491st collegiate victory. Asalon now has 347 wins at NKU, and he collected 144 victories while the head coach at Thomas More.

NKU returns to action Wednesday at 1 p.m. with a home doubleheader against GLVC West Division leader Southern Indiana. Those two games will not count toward the GLVC standings but will have major regional ramifications.
