NKU softball splits GLVC doubleheader at Illinois-Springfield on Saturday afternoon

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Northern Kentucky University softball team split a doubleheader against Illinois-Springfield on Saturday, winning the opener 9-1 and dropping the nightcap by a 5-3 score.

Jessica Farris, April Ehlers and Jamie Raabe each drove in two runs to lead NKU in the opener. In the circle, Ehlers allowed just two hits and struck out 11 batters as the Norse won their 10th consecutive game.

NKU scored five times in the fourth inning to wipe out a 1-0 deficit, and the Norse added four more runs in the fifth to take the run-rule victory against the Prairie Stars. Ehlers had a two-run single to highlight NKU's fifth inning.

In the nightcap, Illinois-Springfield built a 5-1 lead and held on for a 5-3 victory, snapping NKU's winning streak at 10. Rose Broderick homered and drove in two runs for the Norse, who are 18-9 overall, 10-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Illinois-Springfield is 5-19 overall, 2-12 in the GLVC.

NKU hits the road for a doubleheader at Ashland at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Norse return home next Saturday for a noon doubleheader against Bellarmine.
