HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Shannon McCormick's pinch-hit single to left field drove in Max Colaner with the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and Northern Kentucky University went on to post a 3-2 win against Saint Joseph's in the second game of a doubleheader Monday.

With the game tied at 2-all, Colaner led off the sixth inning by drawing a walk. He later stole second, setting the stage for McCormick's line-drive single to left. Colaner slid in safely ahead of Joe Dispensa's throw to give NKU a 3-2 lead.

Jay Hale threw two innings of perfect relief to pick up the win. Hale struck out the final two batters in the seventh to wrap up the victory and give NKU a split of the doubleheader.

NKU held a 2-0 lead until the top of the fifth, when Saint Joseph's tied the score on a two-run triple down the right-field line by Dispensa. Sean Estand followed by lifting a fly ball that was caught by right-fielder Bryan Rose, and Dispensa attempted to tag up and score.

Rose threw a strike to catcher Larry Pempek and nailed Dispensa at the plate to keep the game tied at 2-all. Pempek absorbed the contact from Dispensa, but the senior catcher held onto the ball to complete the double play and end the inning.

In the opener, Saint Joseph's scored four times in the top of the eighth inning and held on for a 9-7 victory against NKU. Dispensa keyed the eighth-inning outburst for the Pumas with a two-run single. Saint Joseph's also took advantage of two NKU errors in the eighth inning to pin the loss on reliever Kevin Jordan, who was victimized for four unearned runs.

Brian Erie was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles to lead the NKU offense in the first game. Jason Cisper went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs, while Rose was 2-for-5 with two runs batted in.

NKU is 22-11 overall, 11-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Saint Joseph's is 14-11 overall, 8-6 in the GLVC.

NKU plays host to Lincoln Memorial at 3 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference game. The Norse entertain Wilmington (Ohio) at 4 p.m. Wednesday in another non-conference game.

NKU resumes GLVC play this weekend with a four-game series against Wisconsin-Parkside, beginning with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
