HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. –
Bradley Vanderglas collected three hits and scored three runs as Northern Kentucky University posted an 8-5 win against Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday afternoon.
Patrick Muth added three hits and scored twice for NKU, which improved to 23-11 overall with the non-conference win. The Norse used a four-run fifth inning to snap a 2-all tie and cruised to the victory.
Jason Cisper and
Shannon McCormick each drove in two runs for NKU, which built a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
Bryan Rose knocked in the first run with a grounder to second, and Cisper followed with a run-scoring single to plate the second run.
After Lincoln Memorial tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, NKU countered by scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth. Vanderglas led off with a single and advanced to third base on Muth's double. Vanderglas then scored on a wild pitch to give NKU a 3-2 lead.
McCormick and
Evan McDole later added run-scoring hits in the fifth, and
Brian Erie plated another run with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.
Cisper and McCormick struck again in the sixth inning with run-scoring hits to extend the Norse advantage to 8-2. Lincoln Memorial (16-20) crept to within 8-5 on a two-run homer by pinch-hitter Shane Kaufman in the eighth inning, but NKU held on and avenged an early-season 7-6 loss to the Railsplitters.
Andy Heston pitched two innings and recorded the win for NKU. Heston also struck out four batters.
Cisper is batting .500 going into Wednesday's 4 p.m. game against Wilmington (Ohio), and the senior outfielder has 20 doubles this season. Pat Eschan currently holds the Norse single-season record for doubles with 22, set in 2002.
In addition, Cisper is on pace to shatter the NKU single-season record for hits. Shaun Erie currently holds the NKU single-season hits record with 83, but Cisper has 67 hits going into Wednesday.
