HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Already down a set to Northern Kentucky University on Sunday afternoon, Missouri S&T built a 19-12 lead in the second frame and appeared on its way to tying the match.
Seven consecutive points later, NKU had tied the set at 19-all. The Norse eventually pulled out a momentum-changing 25-22 victory in the second set and went on to hand the visiting Lady Miners their first Great Lakes Valley Conference loss of the season.
NKU won the match by scores of 25-16, 25-22, 28-26, halting Missouri S&T's winning streak at 11. The Norse, ranked 18th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, hit .286 for the afternoon and improved to 13-2 overall, 7-2 in the GLVC.
Missouri S&T dropped to 13-4 overall, 8-1 in the GLVC. The Lady Miners are in sole possession of first place in the GLVC West Division standings.
Sarah Drennen led NKU with 13 kills, and the senior outside hitter attacked at a .308 clip for the match.
Noelle Peterson added 10 kills and hit .364 as the Norse moved to 5-0 all-time against Missouri S&T.
Gennie Galfano and
Shelby Buschur each collected five block assists as NKU finished with seven team blocks. Galfano also added eight kills, while Buschur finished with seven kills.
Jenna Schreiver recorded a double-double with 41 assists and 11 digs. She also had two key service aces in the third set that helped NKU rally from a 15-11 deficit.
With Missouri S&T holding a 22-21 lead,
Kim Nemcek and Schreiver tallied consecutive kills to give NKU a 23-22 advantage. Missouri S&T eventually fought off three match points, but Peterson ended the contest with two straight kills.
Nemcek finished with eight kills and 10 digs. The senior middle hitter also attacked at a .316 clip and added two blocks. She now has 965 career kills at NKU.
Hayley Wright led Missouri S&T with 14 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. NKU limited the Lady Miners to a .145 hitting percentage.
NKU hits the road next week for GLVC matches at William Jewell (Saturday) and Rockhurst (Sunday). The Norse will then compete in the GLVC/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover Oct. 14-15 in Aurora, Ill.
