HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Four Northern Kentucky University men's soccer players were named to the Daktronics Division II Men's Soccer All-Midwest Region teams, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Defenders
Tommy Barrick and
Kevin Donnelly were named to the first team, while defender
Anthony Meyer and midfielder
Michael Bartlett were second-team honorees.
Barrick, a senior from Gahanna, Ohio, earned his first All-Region honor after being named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference first team. He has been a strong anchor at center back for the NKU defense over the last three seasons. Barrick has also found his way into the offense as well, adding two goals to the team totals this year due in part to his imposing presence in the box on set pieces.
Donnelly, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, adds his first All-Region award after earning Academic All-District recognition for the second consecutive season. A versatile right back who has been pivotal in setting up the Norse attack late in the season, Donnelly's speed and awareness on the field has resulted in three goals and two assists on the year along with countless defensive stops. Donnelly was also honored as a second-team All-GLVC performer.
Meyer, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, was also named to the All-Region second team last year and earned second-team All-GLVC honors this year. Like his fellow honorees on the “Norse Wall,” Meyer has not limited his contributions to the defensive aspects of the game. He has picked up three assists, and caused two opposing own goals, thanks in part to his powerful throw-in technique, giving the Norse an advantage on deep set pieces. Additionally, Meyer has scored a pair of goals this year, netting game winners at Drury and Quincy this year.
Bartlett, a junior from Alexandria, Ky., shared the team lead with five goals this season for the Norse, helping himself to a spot on the All-GLVC second team in the process. Bartlett was a big part of NKU's defense as well, helping the Norse control possession as the center midfielder to stymie opposing attacks and turn the tide for the Norse.
NKU finished the 2011 season with a 14-5 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Midwest Region championship for the fifth time in six years.
