NKU softball extends winning streak to eight by sweeping pair from Missouri S&T

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University softball team used an 11-run outburst in the third inning of the second game Saturday to post a 16-3 victory over Missouri S&T and complete a doubleheader sweep.

NKU pounded out 11 hits in the third inning and also took advantage of a pair of Missouri S&T errors. Jamie Raabe and Emily Schwaeble both drove in two runs during the third-inning outburst by the Norse, who trailed 1-0 entering that frame.

NKU added five runs in the fourth inning to seal the victory. Dana Jarboe had a two-run single to highlight the Norse's fourth-inning scoring.

Schwaeble finished 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, and she also scored three times. Jarboe was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Jessica Farris added two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Norse, who collected 19 hits in the nightcap.

Farris, a junior shortstop from Independence, Ky., now has a 14-game hitting streak.

Chelsie Roy picked up her fifth victory of the season for NKU and finished with two strikeouts. The Norse, who have won eight consecutive games, improved to 13-7 overall. NKU is unbeaten (6-0) in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

In the opener, April Ehlers struck out 14 batters and allowed just two hits as NKU coasted to a 3-0 victory over the Lady Miners. Ehlers, now 7-4 this season with 108 strikeouts, also doubled and scored a run in the win. Schwaeble added her second home run of the season, a solo blast to left field in the sixth inning that capped the scoring.

Missouri S&T dropped to 5-15 overall, 2-4 in the GLVC.

NKU plays host to Drury in a GLVC doubleheader at noon Sunday.
