NKU softball rolls to 14-4 win over Drury in opener; Panthers earn split with 10-2 victory

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – For the second straight day, a big inning helped the Northern Kentucky University softball team cruise to an easy victory.

NKU plated eight runs during the first inning of the opener Sunday and coasted to a 14-4 win against Drury. The previous day, the Norse used an 11-run outburst in the third inning to roll to a 16-3 victory over Missouri S&T.

On Sunday, NKU collected five hits and took advantage of two Drury errors during the eight-run first inning. Mandi McQueen had a two-run single to highlight the Norse offense in the first inning. McQueen finished the opener 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs.

Emily Schwaeble scored three runs in the first game for NKU, while teammates Jessica Farris, Natalie Papi and Ashley Gates all scored twice.

Chelsie Roy, who benefitted from the 16-run performance against Missouri S&T on Saturday, picked up the win and improved to 6-1 this season. Roy had a one-hitter going into the fifth inning, but Drury scored four times to avoid the shutout.

In the nightcap, Drury scored five times in the fifth inning and plated four more runs in the seventh to gain a split with a 10-2 victory. The Panthers finished with 12 hits and snapped NKU's nine-game winning streak.

NKU is now 14-8 overall, 7-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Drury is 11-15 overall, 3-3 in the GLVC. Farris, NKU's junior shortstop, had her 15-game hitting streak halted in the nightcap.

NKU plays host to regional foe Ashland at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.
