FLORENCE, Ky. – Zac Asman's two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped a 5-all tie and lifted the Northern Kentucky University baseball team to a 7-5 victory over Missouri S&T in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.

Randy Weinel started the winning rally with a one-out single. Patrick Hyde then delivered a pinch-hit single to put runners on first and second. A Bradley Vanderglas grounder to third advanced both runners, and Asman followed with a double to left-center field to drive in two runs and give NKU a 7-5 lead.

Patrick Hyde
Andy Heston struck out the side in the ninth to notch the save. Brent Wagner earned the victory by throwing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Asman finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, while teammate Brian Erie scored twice. Vanderglas was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

In the nightcap, Missouri S&T avoided the sweep by posting a 4-2 win against NKU. Zack Gronek allowed just five hits and struck out nine batters en route to the complete-game win for the Miners.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, NKU put runners on second and third with one out. Gronek, however, retired the final two batters to stop the Norse rally and wrap up the victory.

Hyde hit his second home run of the season for NKU, which is 12-8 overall, 2-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Missouri S&T is 11-10 overall, 5-3 in the GLVC.

NKU will play a non-conference road game against Indiana at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday in Bloomington, Ind.
