MAGNOLIA, Ark. –
Zac Asman tied a school record with five hits to lead the Northern Kentucky University baseball team to an 11-3 victory over Southern Arkansas and salvage a doubleheader split against the No. 29 team in the nation.
The Norse fell in the opener, 9-1. NKU, ranked No. 25 in the latest NCAA Division II national poll, is on 5-3 on the season.
Asman made the most of his time on the basepaths, scoring four runs and stealing a base in the process.
Brad Clement went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs while
Brian Erie extended his team-best hitting streak to seven games with a 3-for-4 performance, including three RBIs.
Entering the sixth inning with a 3-3 score, NKU touched the plate five times in the sixth to break the game open.
Andy Heston (2-0) got the win in relief, throwing 1 1/3 inning of scoreless baseball with two strikeouts.
Justin Schultheiss went 4 2/3 innings in the start and fanned eight batters while allowing just two hits.
In the opener,
Dave Middendorf (1-1) struck out nine batters in seven innings of work while allowing seven hits and five runs.

Bradley Vanderglas sacrifice fly in the fifth inning made it a 2-1 game, but the Muleriders (8-5) came back with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth and another in the sixth to take the lead for good. A four-run eighth inning sealed the victory for Southern Arkansas.
Jake Morris went 2-for-3 while Clement was 2-for-4 in the opener.
The teams will play the rubber game of the series on Monday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern.
