MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team came up short in the rubber game against Southern Arkansas, falling by a 6-3 score on Monday afternoon.
The loss drops the No. 25-ranked Norse to 5-4 on the season.
After the Muleriders (9-5) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Norse came back with two in the second inning on the strength of an RBI-single by
Shannon McCormick and an RBI-groundout by
Bradley Vanderglas.
NKU went ahead in the third inning when a
Brian Erie groundout scored
Zac Asman, giving the Norse a 3-2 advantage.
Southern Arkansas then rallied for two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh to claim the victory.
Blake Bagshaw (0-1) took the loss on the mound for NKU, surrendering four runs on five hits in four innings of work.
Andy Heston continued his flawless relief work, pitching a perfect eighth inning while picking up a pair of strikeouts.
Erie went 2-for-4 with a double to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Asman and Vanderglas were each 2-for-4.
NKU returns to action on Sunday, March 13, hosting Ohio Dominican for a non-conference doubleheader. Due to ongoing renovations at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex, the games will be played at Champion Window Field in Florence, Ky. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
