NKU offense generates 27 runs in doubleheader split against Saint Joseph's

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Bradley Vanderglas smashed a grand slam to highlight a nine-run fourth inning as the Northern Kentucky University baseball team rolled to a 16-6 victory over Saint Joseph's in the second game of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Sunday.

Brett Cisper added three hits and scored three times for NKU, which earned a split of the doubleheader after dropping a 17-11 decision in the opener. The Norse are 19-16 overall, 9-11 in the GLVC.

Leading 3-2 going into the bottom of the fourth, NKU used a nine-run outburst to ignite the victory. With the bases loaded and none out, Vanderglas launched his first home run of the season over the wall in left-center field to give NKU an 8-2 lead.

Patrick Hyde later added a two-run homer to cap the fourth-inning scoring and extend the Norse advantage to 12-2.

Brian Erie finished with three runs batted in for NKU, which pounded out 14 hits. Bryan Rose was 3-for-3 and knocked in two runs, while Brad Clement scored three times.

Blake Bagshaw went seven innings and picked up his second win of the season.

Saint Joseph's, which stopped a six-game losing streak with the victory in the opener, is 19-14-1 overall, 12-8 in the GLVC. The Pumas built an 11-2 lead early in the opener, but NKU rallied and pulled to within three runs twice, the last time at 13-10.

Saint Joseph's sealed the win by plating four runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Erie sparked the NKU offense in the opener with four hits, while Cisper scored three times. Vanderglas added three hits for NKU.

NKU, which swept a twinbill from the Pumas on Saturday, won three of the four games in the weekend series. The Norse are now 43-38 all-time against Saint Joseph's.

NKU plays host to Bellarmine at noon Tuesday in a GLVC doubleheader.
