HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Big-time offensive production keyed the Northern Kentucky University softball team's doubleheader sweep over Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday.
NKU posted run-rule victories in both games, winning the opener by an 8-0 score and later taking an 11-2 decision in the nightcap. The Norse improved to 18-9 overall, 9-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Emily Schwaeble hurled a four-hit shutout in the opener with 10 strikeouts and also provided plenty of offense for the NKU attack. The sophomore went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in during the opener.
With the game scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, NKU erupted for seven runs on eight hits.
Ashley Gates collected a two-run double in the fifth inning for the Norse.
NKU closed out the game in the sixth when Schwaeble doubled to left-center field, driving in
Mandi McQueen for an 8-0 victory.
In the nightcap, NKU scored eight times in the bottom of the fourth to break open a close game. Schwaeble,
Michelle Carson and
Rachael May all had two RBIs in the eight-run inning.
McQueen and
Dee Dee Davis each scored two runs in the nightcap for NKU, which finished with 11 hits. Schwaeble was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Chelsie Roy picked up the victory and struck out five batters.
Kentucky Wesleyan dropped to 6-15 overall, 3-7 in the GLVC.
NKU plays host to Southern Indiana at noon Sunday in a GLVC doubleheader.
