INDIANAPOLIS – Outstanding pitching and a final at-bat rally in the opener helped the Northern Kentucky University baseball team sweep a key Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Indianapolis on Sunday.
NKU scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning to win the opener, 3-2, and completed the sweep with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap. The Norse won three of the four games against Indianapolis this weekend and improved to 22-17 overall, 12-12 in the GLVC.
Indianapolis owned a 2-1 lead going into the top of the seventh in the opener, but clutch hits from
Brett Cisper and
Bradley Vanderglas put NKU in front. Cisper's double drove in
Zac Asman with the tying run, and Vanderglas collected a run-scoring single to give the Norse a 3-2 edge.
NKU starter
Blake Bagshaw notched the complete game and struck out five batters. Bagshaw (3-2) also did not walk a batter en route to the victory.
In the nightcap, NKU's
Tim Clark scattered six hits and picked up the complete-game victory. Clark (2-1) finished with seven strikeouts and did not allow a run until the bottom of the ninth.
Brian Erie was 2-for-2 and drove in a pair of runs for NKU, which jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. The Norse added an insurance run in the fifth and coasted behind the pitching of Clark.
NKU vaulted past Indianapolis (24-16, 13-15 GLVC) for fifth place in the GLVC East Division standings.
NKU will play host to Bellarmine at 1 p.m. Tuesday in a GLVC doubleheader.
