HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University softball team finished off a successful weekend at home by sweeping a doubleheader from Southern Indiana on Sunday.
April Ehlers struck out 15 batters in the opener as NKU posted a 5-1 victory. The Norse completed the sweep with another 5-1 win in the nightcap as
Emily Schwaeble and
Natalie Papi each hit home runs and combined to drive in all five NKU runs.
NKU improved to 20-9 overall, 11-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. On Saturday, NKU swept a doubleheader from Kentucky Wesleyan. The Norse are now in sole possession of first place in the GLVC standings.
Southern Indiana is 13-15, 4-8 in the GLVC.
In the opener, Ehlers allowed just three hits and improved to 8-4.
Ashley Gates was 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs. The homer was the fifth of the season for Gates, who owns the NKU career record with 27.
Mandi McQueen and
Dee Dee Davis each scored two runs in the first game. The Norse built a 4-0 lead after three innings and coasted behind the pitching of Ehlers.
Schwaeble and Papi each belted two-run homers in the first inning of the nightcap as NKU bolted out to a 4-0 lead.
Chelsie Roy (8-2) picked up the win for NKU by striking out 12 and scattering six hits.
NKU plays host to Malone in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday at 3 p.m.
