HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Thanks in large part to
Dave Middendorf and
Bryan Rose, Northern Kentucky University swept a doubleheader from Wisconsin-Parkside on Senior Day.
Middendorf tossed a four-hitter in the opener as NKU pulled out a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon. In the nightcap, Rose's run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped a 2-all tie and helped the Norse post a 3-2 win over the Rangers.
NKU extended its winning streak to seven and improved to 26-17 overall, 16-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse, who swept the four-game series against Wisconsin-Parkside, have won 10 of their past 12 contests.
Middendorf, a senior left-hander from LaSalle High School in Cincinnati, struck out six batters en route to the complete-game victory. He allowed a run and three hits in the first inning, but then settled down and gave up just one hit the remainder of the game. Middendorf is now 6-3 this spring.
Shannon McCormick was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the opener. NKU plated single runs in the third and fourth innings, and that was all Middendorf needed.
In the nightcap, Wisconsin-Parkside pushed across a run in the top of the eighth to take a 2-1 lead. NKU, however, responded with an RBI single from
Bradley Vanderglas to tie the game at 2-all.
Rose stepped to the plate with two outs and singled to center, driving in Vanderglas from second base to give NKU a 3-2 lead.
Bryan Baldini pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save.
Norse head coach
Todd Asalon now has 388 career victories in 11 years at NKU and 537 wins overall.
NKU hits the road next weekend for a four-game series at Lewis. The teams begin the series Saturday with a doubleheader in Romeoville, Ill.
