CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University men's tennis team opened its spring season with a 6-3 victory over Vincennes on Thursday night at Five Seasons Sports Club.
The Norse improved to 2-0 on the year after defeating the defending NJCAA national champions and current No. 3 team in the NJCAA rankings.
NKU opened strong, sweeping all three doubles points in highly contested matches.
Martin Leroy and
Tyler Fraser took a 9-7 tiebreaker decision in the No. 1 doubles flight against Jose Soto and Erick Bermudez, while the Norse took the other two flights by 8-6 scores.
Vincennes (0-1) came back quickly in singles play, picking up wins in the No. 4 and No. 5 flights before
Andre Correa got a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Bermudez in the No. 3 flight and Fraser sealed victory for the Norse with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Rafael Bulnes in the No. 6 flight.
Leroy also took victory in singles play against Soto, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).
“I was pleased the men came out playing very aggressive in doubles,” said head coach
Brian Nester, who picked up his first coaching victory at NKU on Thursday evening. “It set the tone for the winning night.”
The Norse return to action for another tough test on Saturday, facing No. 6-ranked Abilene Christian in Richmond, Ky.
