Max Colaner went 3-for-4 with a run scored, two stolen bases and an RBI to lead the Northern Kentucky University baseball team to a 9-3 victory over Iowa Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.
The Tigers took advantage of a
Brad Clement error to jump out to an early 3-1 lead after the first inning.
However, NKU responded with a three-run second to capture the lead.
Pat Williams started the inning off for the Norse with a single to right field, and
Zac Asman reached base after being hit by a pitch.
Brandon Wood laid down a bunt in front of catcher Marco Prieto, but Prieto bobbled the throw to first allowing Williams to score.
Jake Morris singled to left field to bring Asman home.
Josh Myers' bunt allowed him to reached base on a fielder's choice, and Wood slid under the tag by third baseman Corey Amerson to load the bases.
Kris Hecktor singled to bring Wood home for the final run of the inning to give the Norse a 4-3 advantage.
NKU struck again in the bottom of the fifth.
Clement sparked the Norse offense with a double to left center and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
After Williams earned a walk, Asman hit his second double of the season to bring home Clement.
Both Williams and Asman scored on a single by Wood. Myers singled to right field, advancing Wood to second.
A single by Colaner allowed Wood to score, and NKU took an 8-3 lead.
The Norse added a run in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin.
Drew Campbell picked up the win for NKU and improved to 2-1 on the season. He only surrendered one hit and did not allow a run. He also collected two strikeouts in two innings on the mound.
Hecktor went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Norse, while Wood finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
NKU improved to 7-7 on the season, while Iowa Wesleyan fell to 8-11.
The Norse begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play next weekend at home with doubleheaders against Quincy on Saturday and Illinois-Springfield on Sunday. The first game are scheduled to start at noon both days.
