HARROGATE, Tenn. –
Emily Schwaeble threw her first career no-hitter to spur the Northern Kentucky University softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday.
The two wins improved the Norse to 8-4 on the season and gave the Norse their fifth consecutive victory.
The junior pitcher struck out 12 Railsplitters and allowed just two runners on base via the walk in the Game 1 win. It was the first no-hitter of Schwaeble's collegiate career and the second for the Norse as a team in as many years. Last season,
April Ehlers held Ferris State hitless in a 3-0 victory on March 9, 2011.
The Norse managed just three hits themselves in the pitchers' duel, with
Mandi McQueen's RBI-double in the fourth inning to score
Jessica Farris proving to be the difference maker.
NKU added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning after
Dee Dee Davis hit an RBI-double to score
Allie Conner. Davis would later come around to score on a fielding error.
The Norse jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in Game 2 when
Kari Lang slammed her first home run of the season over the left field wall in the third inning. The Railsplitters (8-15) responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own.
Katelyn Roy's RBI-single in the bottom of the fourth tied the game back up before the NKU offense exploded for four runs in the seventh inning, punctuated by Schwaeble's first home run of the year, a two-run shot to left field.
Schwaeble (6-1) picked up the win in relief, throwing 2 1/3 innings of perfect softball while picking up four strikeouts.
Alex Caudill struck out three batters in the start.
The total of 16 strikeouts on the day moved Schwaeble to ninth all-time in strikeouts at NKU with 192, passing Candace White, who fanned 181 batters over her career.
The Norse conclude their road trip on Wednesday, taking on King College in Bristol, Tenn. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
