HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. –
Kris Hecktor's single to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning drove in the go-ahead run and gave the Northern Kentucky University baseball team a 3-2 victory in Game 2 over Indianapolis to salvage a doubleheader split on Sunday at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.
NKU, which improved to 24-10 overall, 17-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with the win, broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-0 advantage.
Zac Asman began the inning with a walk for NKU. He advanced to second when Hecktor grounded out to second base and proceeded to third on a
Jake Morris ground out.
Patrick Hyde singled to center field to bring Asman home. A wild pitch allowed Hyde to advance to second, and he scored when
Max Colaner tripled to right-center.
Indianapolis (22-10 overall, 13-5 in the GLVC) responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the ballgame.
The Norse started the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles by
Brad Clement and Phil Smith.
Pat Williams laid down a sacrifice bunt, which allowed both Clement and Smith to advance.
The Greyhounds intentionally walked Asman to load the bases.
Clement scored the winning run on when Hecktor singled to center field.
Brett Loeding picked up the win for NKU and improved to 5-1 on the season. He only allowed one earned run on three hits in three innings of work.
Clement and Hecktor both went 2-for-3 to lead the Norse.
Indianapolis scored six runs in the third inning of the opening game to take the lead and cruised to a 17-3 win over NKU.
Donovan Drake (5-1) only allowed three runs on seven hits for the Greyhounds. He struck out four Norse batters in eight innings of work.
Mike Page finished 4-for-7 with six RBIs and two runs, while Nate Koontz went 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI for Indianapolis.
NKU returns to action on Wednesday in Louisville, Ky., for a doubleheader against Bellarmine. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
The Norse held the Knights scoreless in a doubleheader sweep at home on April 3.
Bradley Vanderglas went 5-for-6 with three runs scored, four RBIs and a stolen on the day to lead NKU to a 9-0 victory in the opening game and 6-0 win in the nightcap.
