SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Northern Kentucky University women's tennis team was stopped short of a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship on Friday, defeating Missouri-St. Louis in the quarterfinals but falling to No. 22 Drury in the semifinal round.

The Norse (10-9) defeated UMSL, 5-2, and took a 5-1 loss to Drury.  NKU will now face Rockhurst in a consolation match on Saturday.

NKU's depth proved to be the difference once again for the Norse as NKU claimed doubles victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 flights against UMSL.  Whitney Thomas and Marta Romeo defeated Katie Rynkiewich and Leticia Garcia, 8-5, while Jillian Sturgeon and Jenny Hand needed a 9-2 tiebreak to defeat Danielle Henkel and Leanne Cantalupo.

In singles play, All-GLVC honoree Marta Romeo got the Norse started with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Henkel in the No. 2 flight.  Jenny Hand soon followed suit at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Cantalupo.  Clemence Binon sealed the victory with a 7-5 third-set victory over Pujitha Bandi at No. 3.

NKU's lone victory in the semifinal round came from Hand and Sturgeon at No. 3 doubles, who defeated Drury's Alanda Bellinger and Abbey Sharp, 8-3.
