OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team swept a doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan to extend its winning streak to 14 on Friday afternoon at Panther Park in Owensboro, Ky.
NKU improved to 21-9 overall, 14-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Norse took advantage of Kentucky Wesleyan errors to earn a 4-2 victory in Game 2.
The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings, but the Norse cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the fourth.
Brett Cisper reached base on an error by second baseman Max Aubrey, and he advanced to second on a
Zac Asman single.
A double steal by Cisper and Asman moved both ahead a base. Cisper scored when
Jake Morris grounded out.
NKU took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth inning.
Max Colaner and
Bradley Vanderglas sparked the Norse offense with back-to-back singles. A wild pitch advanced both runners, and Colaner scored on a throwing error by catcher Mark Hagedorn on the play.
Brad Clement singled to bring home Vanderglas and proceeded to steal second base. Clement advanced to third when
Phil Smith flied out.
Clement scored the final run of the game on a single by Cisper.
Brent Wagner (2-0) pitched one inning of relief and picked up the win for NKU. He did not allow a hit and struck out one batter.
Brett Loeding earned his second save of the day to increase his season total to seven. He did not surrender a run and collected three strikeouts.
Vanderglas finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Asman went 2-for-2 for the Norse.
NKU used a three-run seventh inning to defeat Kentucky Wesleyan 4-1 in the opening game of the series.
Kris Hecktor put the Norse on the scoreboard in the second inning, but the Panthers responded with a run in the fifth to tie the game.
Cisper began the seventh for NKU with a strike out, but he reached base on a passed ball. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Asman.
Back-to-back singles by Colaner and Vanderglas allowed Cisper to score the go-ahead run.
A Clement double brought home both Colaner and Vanderglas to seal the victory for NKU.
Cody Cooper improved to 4-0 on the season with the win for the Norse. He only allowed one run on six hits in six innings of work. He also added five strikeouts.
Kentucky Wesleyan fell to 13-13 overall, 7-7 in the GLVC.
The two teams return to the field tomorrow afternoon for the final two games of the series. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
