HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. –
Emily Schwaeble had a pair of two hit games as the Northern Kentucky University softball team was swept in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday by division rival Lewis.
The Norse dropped Game 1 by an 8-7 score in 10 innings and lost the nightcap, 2-0. NKU is now 23-15 overall and 13-11 in GLVC play.
NKU jumped on the scoreboard early in Game 1, capitalizing on a pair of Lewis errors in the first inning to plate two runs and scoring another in the second inning on a
Kaylin Steinmetz RBI-double.
Michelle Vucsko had the first of her two big hits in the top of the third inning, launching a two-out, three-run homer to tie the score.
Dana Jarboe responded in the bottom of the third with an RBI-double to retake the lead for the Norse.
Lewis (20-21, 12-14 GLVC) struck for four more runs in the fifth inning to open up a 7-5 lead, which the Flyers carried into the seventh inning before
Natalie Papi tied the game back up with a two-run home run, her third long ball of the season.
The Flyers would go ahead for good in the 10th inning when Jayme Hefler, who walked to lead off the frame, scored on an errant pickoff throw. NKU looked to answer in the bottom half after
Dee Dee Davis drew a one-out walk, but the Norse couldn't bring her around.
Schwaeble (16-5) took the loss for the Norse, giving up three earned runs on 12 hits in 10 innings of work while striking out four. Schwaeble also went 2-6 at the plate and was one of three Norse to get two hits in the contest.
The junior also had two of NKU's four hits in a 2-0 Game 2 loss. Hefler was the difference maker for the Flyers once more, scoring in the first inning on a Hanford groundout and giving Flyer pitcher Kelly Bowler all the support she needed.
The Norse got their best chance to score in the fourth inning when
Dana Jarboe, who had another two-hit performance in Game 1, stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. The sophomore laced a screaming line drive to the right side, but Flyer first baseman Alyssa Moseley was there to make the catch and tag first to complete the double play and end the inning.
Alex Caudill (7-9) pitched well, allowing just one earned run while scattering seven hits and striking out two in the loss.
NKU will close out the Easter weekend tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader against Wisconsin-Parkside. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
