Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s soccer earns season-opening 3-1 victory over IPFW

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Sophomore forward Jessica Frey led the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team with two goals on Friday night as the Norse defeated IPFW, 3-1, at NKU Soccer Stadium to open the 2015 season.

The Norse out-shot the Mastodons 30-10 overall, with 19 of their shots coming in the first half. Northern Kentucky's 30 shots are the most attempted by the Norse in a game at the Division I level.

NKU pulled ahead early, netting its first goal in the third minute when Frey fired a shot past IPFW's Kiley Dunning into the far left corner of the net. Frey was assisted by sophomore forward Macy Hamblin and redshirt senior forward Kelsey Laumann. The goal was Hambiln's first of three assists on the night.

The early 1-0 advantage stuck at the half.

NKU expanded its lead in the second half with a pair of one-touch goals, the first coming in the 48th minute when Hamblin and Frey paired up again. Freshman Payton Naylor set up the scoring attack, serving it ahead for Hamblin. Frey took a cross from Hamblin in front of the net and headed the ball in for a 2-0 edge.

The Norse quickly added to the lead when Laumann scored a goal of her own after tapping it in on a double assist from Hamblin and Sami Rutowski in the 55th minute. From the close left wing, Rutowski served it in the air through the box, before Laumann fired it in to the lower left corner.

IPFW spoiled the shutout bid in the 66th minute when IPFW's Rachel Good dribbled into the offensive third and kicked it out to Kallianne Mogler for the Mastodon's lone goal.

The Norse are back in action on Sunday, Aug. 23 when they travel to Charleston, Ill. to take on Eastern Illinois at Lakeside Field at 2 p.m. ET.

NORSE NOTES:
  • Hamblin led the Norse with a game-high 10 shots and four shots on goal to go with her three assists. Frey followed with eight shots, three on goal.
  • NKU had two looks on direct free kicks at the top of the box. In the 84th minute, junior Katelyn Newton took the set piece, feeding it inside to Hamblin for a header. The shot attempt was good, but was overturned on an offside call.
  • The Norse held IPFW to one shot in the first half before the Mastodons managed nine shots in the second half.
