INDIANAPOLIS – Following one of the greatest goalkeeping performances in Northern Kentucky Athletics history,
Mickayla Kowalski was named the Horizon League Under Armour Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive time, announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Kowalski took home the league honor for the second consecutive week after she led the Norse to a 0-0 draw against Ohio on Sunday. In the match, the Harrison, Ohio native posted a career-best 12 saves, a mark that ranks her second all-time in school history for most saves in a single match.
The senior goalkeeper has been on absolute fire over her last three contests. During the stretch, Kowalski has posted three straight clean sheets and 21 saves overall as the Norse have gone 1-0-2. She has also racked up a scoreless streak of over 293 minutes of action, dating back to August 20.
Kowalski is now ranked tied for first in the Horizon in shutouts (3), third in saves (30) and fourth in goals against average (.800). On the national level, she is tied for 19th in all of NCAA Division I in clean sheets, tied for 28th in saves per match (6.0), tied for 29th in total saves and tied for 41st in save percentage (.882).
The weekly conference honor is the second of Kowalski's career, after she also claimed the award just a week ago. She is the first NKU student-athlete to win the honor in back-to-back weeks since
Lydia Self won the award back on September 13 and September 20 in 2021.
Northern Kentucky hits the road for its third straight match away from Highland Heights as the Norse will battle in-state foe Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, September 7. Kick is set for 4 PM ET from EKU Soccer Field. The non-conference clash will be
streamed in front of a national audience on ESPN+.
