DAYTON, Ohio - University of Dayton men's basketball head coach Brian Gregory announced Tuesday that his Flyers will play NCAA Division II powerhouse Northern Kentucky University in an exhibition game on Nov. 9.
NKU will replace Georgetown (Ky.) College, which was originally slated to play Dayton that evening.
"Georgetown contacted us with a potential conflict and asked if they could be replaced on the schedule," Gregory said. "They said they would honor our contract with them if we could not find someone else, but luckily Northern Kentucky stepped in. I've known about the quality of NKU's basketball program for a long time, and (head coach)
Dave Bezold does a great job with his team. This will be a good test for us."
NKU met Dayton in a regular-season game 16 years ago. A crowd of 10,836 was on hand at UD Arena on Dec. 1, 1993, to watch Dayton rally past NKU, 99-82. That is the only time NKU and Dayton have played in men's basketball.
NKU was 24-7 and won the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship last season. The Norse have won at least 20 games in three straight seasons and have captured three consecutive GLVC East Division championships.
NKU will also play at Xavier in an exhibition game on Nov. 7.
