HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. –
Corey Sorrell's 17-foot jumper with 5.3 seconds remaining in overtime lifted Northern Kentucky University to a 74-73 win against Lewis on Saturday.
Sorrell finished with 16 points for NKU, which won its fourth straight game and improved to 8-4 overall, 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Lewis had a last-second attempt, but Chris McClellan's shot was blocked by
Chris Knight and rebounded by
David Palmer as the buzzer sounded.
The victory allowed NKU to remain perfect (19-0) all-time in The Bank of Kentucky Center. It marked the second consecutive overtime win for NKU, which also picked up a 91-89 extra-session victory against UC-Clermont on Dec. 23.
Lewis (9-3 overall, 1-2 GLVC) had taken a 73-72 lead with 23 seconds remaining on a pair of made free throws by Dennis Thomas Jr. After a timeout, NKU's
Scott Bibbins found Sorrell alone on the right baseline. The freshman forward from Holy Cross High School buried the jumper to give NKU a 74-73 advantage, setting the stage for Knight's block in the final seconds.
Palmer scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for NKU, while Knight added 17 points and three blocks. Bibbins finished with 15 points, including seven in the overtime period.
NKU owned a 63-58 lead with two minutes left in regulation, but Lewis scored five straight points to force overtime. Knight had a chance to win the game for NKU at the buzzer, but his jumper was off the mark.
Thomas led Lewis with 24 points, and McClellan scored 22. The Flyers were 22-for-26 at the free-throw line, including 7-for-8 in the overtime period.
