NKU women use huge first-half run to knock off Lewis, 71-55, Saturday in GLVC battle

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Three Northern Kentucky University players scored in double figures Saturday afternoon as the Norse women's basketball team posted a 71-55 win against Lewis in The Bank of Kentucky Center.

Brandi Rayburn netted a game-high 22 points for NKU, which improved to 7-4 overall, 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Casse Mogan added 18 points for the Norse, while Rachel Lantry finished with 14 points. Mogan, a sophomore guard from Circleville, Ohio, led NKU with four assists and has scored in double figures in all 11 games this season.

NKU used a 34-9 run to end the first half to take a 38-19 advantage at the break. During that spurt, NKU scored 15 unanswered points to turn a 15-12 deficit into a 27-15 lead. Rayburn scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to key the 15-0 run.

Rayburn, a senior forward from Olive Hill, Ky., scored 18 points in the first half.

NKU led by as many as 25 points in the second half and cruised to the win. The Norse won the rebounding battle by a 42-29 margin and shot 51 percent from the field.

Whitney Levering added eight points and six rebounds for NKU, which is now 44-6 all-time against Lewis. The Norse held the visiting Flyers to 30.5 percent shooting from the field.

Jenny Turpel collected a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) to lead Lewis, which has dropped seven consecutive games against NKU. The Flyers are 6-6 overall, 2-1 in the GLVC.

The Norse improved to 27-1 all-time at home against the Flyers. Lewis' only win in Highland Heights came on Dec. 19, 1996, when the Flyers claimed a 54-49 decision against NKU in Regents Hall.

NKU plays host to No. 12 Quincy (10-1, 2-1 GLVC) at 5:30 p.m. Monday in a GLVC showdown. Quincy lost to unbeaten Indianapolis, 80-52, on Saturday to begin its GLVC road trip.
