NKU volleyball hits .323, coasts to key GLVC victory against Rockhurst on Saturday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University ran its offense to perfection Saturday afternoon and coasted to a four-set win against Rockhurst in Regents Hall.

NKU attacked at a .323 clip for the match and posted a 25-15, 15-25, 25-23, 25-19 victory against Rockhurst. Gennie Galfano led the way for NKU with 16 kills and a .667 hitting percentage. Galfano, a sophomore from Eau Claire, Wis., converted the 16 kills in 24 attempts with no errors.

Jenna Schreiver directed the NKU attack and finished with 49 assists, six kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Shelby Buschur added 12 kills, eight blocks and attacked at a .333 clip for the Norse, who won their fourth consecutive match and improved to 11-7 overall, 4-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Rockhurst, which hit .241 for the match, dropped to 14-3 overall, 4-2 in the GLVC. Maggie McGovern led the Hawks with 13 kills.

Sarah Drennen collected 11 kills and hit .280 for NKU, while teammate Kylee Tarantino finished with 20 digs. Katie Sommer added six kills and hit .364 for the Norse, and Noelle Peterson finished with six kills.

The Norse served up eight aces, with Schreiver, Drennen and Kelly Morrissey each finishing with two aces. The win allowed NKU to draw even in the all-time series against Rockhurst at 4-4.

A year ago, the Norse defeated Rockhurst in the regular season but later lost to the Hawks in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament.

NKU meets Robert Morris (Ill.) at 11 a.m. Sunday, followed by a 3 p.m. contest against Urbana. The Norse resume GLVC play next week, beginning with a Friday match against Lewis in Romeoville, Ill. On Saturday, NKU concludes the trip with a match at Wisconsin-Parkside.
