QUINCY, Ill. – The Northern Kentucky University volleyball team wrapped up a perfect weekend of Great Lakes Valley Conference play by sweeping past Quincy, 27-25, 25-13, 25-15, Saturday afternoon in the Pepsi Arena.
Shelby Buschur finished with nine kills and hit .562 for NKU, which improved to 18-12 overall, 8-4 in the GLVC. The Norse, who had swept a match at Illinois-Springfield on Friday night, used a 7-0 run in the opening set Saturday to rally from an 18-12 deficit and take a 19-18 lead.
NKU eventually built a 24-21 edge, but Quincy rallied to take a 25-24 advantage. NKU, however, countered with consecutive kills from
Kelly Morrissey,
Sarah Drennen and
Gennie Galfano to take the set by a 27-25 score.
NKU rolled past the Lady Hawks in the final two sets to secure the victory. Drennen served up three aces and added eight kills, while Morrissey also finished with three aces. The Norse hit .216 for the match and limited the Lady Hawks to a .061 attacking percentage.
NKU is now 24-1 all-time against Quincy. NKU's only loss to Quincy came on Sept. 11, 1998, when the Lady Hawks outlasted the Norse in five sets at Quincy, Ill.
NKU returns home next weekend to close out the regular season with matches against nationally ranked Missouri-St. Louis on Friday, and Missouri S&T on Saturday.
NKU will then head to the GLVC Tournament, which will be held at the site of the No. 1 seed. The GLVC Tournament will be played Nov. 12-14, with the winner receiving an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
NKU needs two victories to clinch its 18th consecutive 20-win season. The Norse are currently ranked seventh in the NCAA Division II Midwest region poll.
