NKU volleyball falls to three-time defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul in opener

TAMPA, Fla. – Cassie Haag and Emily Palkert combined for 22 kills as three-time defending NCAA Division II national champion Concordia-St. Paul swept past Northern Kentucky University in three sets Friday in the University of Tampa Classic.

Haag collected 11 kills and attacked at a .476 clip for Concordia-St. Paul (1-0), which won by scores of 25-6, 25-19, 25-16. The Golden Bears hit .416 as a team and extended their winning streak to 75 consecutive matches.

Palkert added 11 kills and a .421 hitting percentage for Concordia-St. Paul, which has not lost a match since Aug. 28, 2008, when Cal State San Bernardino posted a three-set victory against the Golden Bears.

Shelby Buschur finished with 12 kills and hit .450 for NKU. Jenna Schreiver dished out 21 assists for the Norse, who attacked at a .165 clip for the match. Sarah Drennen added five kills for NKU, while teammate Gennie Galfano collected four kills.

NKU (0-2) later dropped a three-set decision (25-20, 25-11, 25-19) to Central Missouri, which is ranked No. 5 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. Buschur led NKU with 16 kills and hit .321. Central Missouri attacked at a .400 clip for the match, including .733 during the second set.

The Norse conclude the two-day tournament Saturday with matches against No. 3 Tampa and No. 13 Nebraska-Kearney.

NKU plays host to Mount St. Joseph in the home opener Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Regents Hall.
