HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. –
Casse Mogan scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half, including a pair of game-clinching free throws in the final seconds, to lead the Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team to a 62-57 win against Saint Joseph's on Thursday.
Kelsey Simpson added 11 points as NKU improved to 13-6 overall, 7-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Ellen Holton finished with 10 points for the Norse, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
NKU built a 30-18 halftime lead by holding Saint Joseph's to 29.6 percent shooting from the field. Mogan's second-half performance helped the Norse hold off a late Saint Joseph's rally, and NKU defeated the Pumas for the seventh straight time.
After Saint Joseph's pulled to within 60-57 on a 3-pointer by Tatiana Ortiz with 14 seconds left, Mogan sealed the win for NKU with 7.1 seconds remaining by making a pair of free throws. Ortiz led Saint Joseph's (7-12 overall, 4-7 GLVC) with 23 points.
Mogan, a junior guard from Circleville, Ohio, added four assists, two blocked shots and two steals. She now has 911 career points and is No. 32 on NKU's all-time scoring list.
NKU finished with a 40-27 advantage in rebounding and shot 48.8 percent from the field. Saint Joseph's made just 34.4 percent from the field, but 20 NKU turnovers allowed the Pumas to remain in the game.
Sadie Bowling grabbed nine rebounds and scored six points for NKU.
Kayla Thacker finished with eight points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots as the Norse remained unbeaten (10-0) at home this season.
NKU is now 40-13 all-time against Saint Joseph's, and the Norse have beaten the Pumas 17 consecutive times at home. Saint Joseph's last win in Highland Heights, Ky., came on Feb. 13, 1993, when the Pumas pulled out a 67-65 victory against NKU in Regents Hall.
NKU concludes its two-game homestand Saturday with a GLVC contest against Illinois-Springfield at 3 p.m.
