WILDER, Ky. -
Steven Beattie scored a pair of goals Sunday afternoon to lead the Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory against Saint Joseph's at the Town & Country Sports Complex.
Beattie netted his first goal just 10 seconds into the game by sending a rebound of his own shot past Puma goalie Alex Makin for a 1-0 NKU lead. Beattie's goal is the fifth-fastest to ever start a game, according to the NCAA records book.
The fastest goal ever recorded in NCAA history is five seconds, set by Bo Jurney of Catawba (N.C.) against Newberry on Oct. 1, 1998.
Mike Jonca extended NKU's lead to 2-0 at the 13:18 mark with a goal off an assist from Beattie. It was Jonca's second goal of the season.
Beattie capped the scoring at the 62:48 mark by finishing off a breakaway with his 11th goal of the season. The sophomore striker from Skerries, Ireland, leads the Great Lakes Valley Conference with the 11 goals.
NKU's defense posted its sixth shutout of the season, with
Michael Lavric and
Keith Kelly sharing the goalie duties. Lavric recorded four saves in 82 minutes of play.
NKU improved to 8-1-1 overall, 4-1-1 in the GLVC. The Norse are ranked 10th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. Saint Joseph's dropped to 3-6-3 overall, 1-3-2 in the GLVC.
NKU returns to action Friday night with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Missouri-St. Louis at the Town & Country Sports Complex. The Norse also play host to Southern Indiana at 2:30 p.m. next Sunday.
