WILDER, Ky. - Steven Beattie's goal with 3:45 remaining in regulation lifted the Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against Missouri S&T in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Sunday.
With the game scoreless and time running out, Beattie took a pass on the left side and dribbled inside the box. He then chipped a shot over Missouri S&T goalie Pat McNamee, who came out of the net to challenge Beattie.
The ball found the back of the net in the right corner, giving NKU a 1-0 lead. Alex Allison and Braden Bishop were credited with assists on the goal, which was the 18th of the season for Beattie.
Beattie, a sophomore striker from Skerries, Ireland, was named GLVC Offensive Player of the Year earlier in the week.
NKU, which is ranked No. 9 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, improved to 14-1-2 overall. The third-seeded Norse controlled the field most of the game and finished with a 15-4 advantage in shot attempts.
NKU goalie Michael Lavric recorded the shutout and stopped one shot.
NKU will meet seventh-seeded Bellarmine - which ousted No. 2 seed Lewis in a penalty-kick shootout on Sunday - in the GLVC Tournament semifinals on Friday at Kansas City, Mo. In the other semifinal, Drury will meet top-seeded Rockhurst. The GLVC Tournament championship game will be played Sunday.
