WILDER, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team closed out the weekend emphatically with a 9-0 victory over Charleston (W. Va.) on Sunday afternoon.

Steven Beattie recorded a hat trick for the fifth-ranked Norse (2-0), scoring the first two goals of the game less than three minutes apart. The first came in the 22nd minute off a loose ball in the box, while his second came off a direct free kick in the 25th minute.

Beattie completed the hat trick in the 59th minute, converting a penalty kick to notch his team-leading fourth marker of the season.

The new blood for the Norse got in the action as well, as freshman Anthony Meyer notched his first goal of the season off a Kevin Donnelly corner kick in the 38th minute. Zach Roesch's penalty kick in the 41st minute was the first of his two goals on the day, with the second coming in the closing minutes of the match.

Donnelly touched the twine himself in the 42nd minute, following shortly by Tommy Barrack, with assists to Donnelly and Meyer.

Sophomore transfer Stephen O'Brien got in the mix as well, getting a shot past Charleston (0-2) goalkeeper Robert Spain in the 48th minute.

The Norse dominated throughout, outshooting the Golden Eagles by a 29-6 margin. All three NKU goalkeepers saw action in the contest, with sophomore Michael Lavric making two saves in the victory.

The nine-goal offensive output is the most ever scored by the Norse at Town & Country, and is the most by an NKU team since Sept. 29, 1996, when the Norse defeated Indianapolis, 9-0.

The Norse move on to face 2007 NCAA Division II Tournament participant Carson-Newman on Friday in a key non-conference test. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
