SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team ended Drury's quest for a perfect season Friday afternoon by posting a 2-1 victory against the previously unbeaten Panthers.
Braden Bishop and
Steven Beattie tallied goals as NKU improved to 12-2-1 overall, 9-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse are ranked 12th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll and prevented No. 3 Drury (13-1 overall, 10-1 GLVC) from clinching the top seed for the upcoming GLVC Tournament.
Bishop converted a penalty kick just 2:23 into the contest to give NKU a 1-0 lead. The Norse held that advantage until the 77:15 mark, when Drury tied it at 1-all on Steve Wilczewski's goal.
Beattie answered quickly by scoring a goal off a Bishop assist from 15 yards out at the 80:21 mark to give NKU a 2-1 lead. It marked the 46th goal of Beattie's career and allowed him to tie Chad Scott for the school record.
The Panthers, who could have clinched the GLVC regular-season title and overall No. 1 seed for the league tournament with a victory, outshot the Norse 17-10, including 6-2 on goal.
NKU also avenged last season's 3-2 overtime loss at Drury. At that time, the Norse were the unbeaten, top-ranked team in the country and carried a 29-game regular-season winning streak.
NKU concludes the road trip Sunday with a GLVC contest at Missouri S&T. The Norse return home next Friday to meet Maryville at 7:30 p.m. in Wilder, Ky.
