WAYNESVILLE, Mo. –
Steven Beattie netted a pair of goals Sunday afternoon to become Northern Kentucky University's all-time career leader in that category as the Norse men's soccer team cruised to a 3-1 win against Missouri S&T.
Beattie also added an assist as NKU improved to 13-2-1 overall, 10-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse are ranked 12th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll and have won five consecutive games.
Beattie, a junior striker from Skerries, Ireland, helped NKU build a 1-0 lead just 45 seconds into the contest by sending a pass to
Alex Oeswein, who drilled a 10-yard shot into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. The Norse took that 1-0 advantage into intermission, even though Missouri S&T held a 6-4 edge in first-half shots.
At the 48:05 mark, Beattie scored his 47th career goal off an assist from
Jordan Grant to give NKU a 2-0 lead. That score also allowed Beattie to become NKU's all-time leader in goals scored as he surpassed the 46 scored by Chad Scott from 1992-95.
Beattie capped NKU's scoring at the 54:53 mark by redirecting a shot into the net after a throw-in for his 48th career goal.
Anthony Meyer picked up the assist on Beattie's team-leading 16th goal of the season.
Missouri S&T (6-5-1 overall, 6-4-1 GLVC) avoided the shutout when David Kekec scored a goal at the 85:13 mark. NKU goalie
Michael Lavric played all 90 minutes and recorded eight saves.
NKU plays a non-conference road game at Carson-Newman on Wednesday. NKU returns home to play GLVC newcomer Maryville at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.
