UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Ferris State took advantage of a fifth-inning throwing error that led to a pair of unearned runs and posted a 5-1 win against Northern Kentucky University in an elimination game at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional on Sunday.
NKU held a 1-0 lead going into the top of the fifth inning, but Ferris State put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the frame. Norse pitcher
April Ehlers then fielded a bunt attempt by Ferris State's Amanda Harrington, but her throw to first base sailed over the head of second baseman
Caroline Snyder.
Ehlers' throw went down the right-field line and allowed both runners to score, giving Ferris State a 2-1 lead.
Ferris State (35-9) added a single run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to seal the win and eliminate NKU (32-23) from the NCAA Tournament.
NKU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from
Shatona Campbell. Ferris State pitcher Kayle Stevenson, however, settled down and allowed just three more hits the remainder of the game.
Ferris State entered the game ranked 21st nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. NKU had beaten the Bulldogs in the opening game of the Midwest Regional on Friday.
