INDIANAPOLIS
– A five-minute stretch early in the second half keyed the Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team's 2-0 victory over IUPUI on Saturday.

NKU was outshot by an 8-4 margin in the first half while maintaining the scoreless tie.

Steven Beattie, the reigning Division II National Player of the Year, broke the scoreless tie just two minutes after the intermission by taking a corner kick from Kevin Donnelly and pushing it past the IUPUI goakeeper to take the lead.

Beattie and the Norse kept the pressure on, as the junior managed two more shots on goal in the next three minutes before a Jaguar foul inside the box granted the Norse a penalty kick, which senior Braden Bishop successfully converted for the insurance marker.

By the end of the contest, the Norse held the margin in shots, 14-13.

Michael Lavric was stellar in net for the Norse, making seven saves in the shutout performance.

The victory put a positive end to NKU's exhibition play and built momentum to next weekend's season-opening John Toebben Classic. The Norse will host West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday with a 7:30 p.m. kick-off before facing Lake Erie next Sunday at 4 p.m.
