WILDER, Ky. – For the second time in her career,
Ashley Warndorf tied a Northern Kentucky University single-game record with four goals Sunday afternoon during an 8-2 victory against Concord (W.Va.).
Warndorf, a senior striker and a graduate of Oak Hills High School in Cincinnati, netted two goals in the first half as NKU rallied from an early 2-1 deficit to win its season opener. The Norse scored seven unanswered goals to roll past the Mountain Lions (1-1) and improve to 11-2 all-time in season-opening games.
For Warndorf, it marked the second time she has netted four goals against Concord. On Sept. 2, 2005, she tied the NKU single-game record with four goals against Concord during a 7-1 victory. Warndorf then suffered a season-ending injury the next game in 2005 and was granted a medical redshirt year.
Warndorf (twice), Betsy Moore (vs. Mercyhurst in 2000) and Tricia Ruark (vs. Wheeling Jesuit in 2001) share the single-game NKU record of four goals.
During the opening nine minutes of Sunday's contest, Concord scored a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead. Warndorf, who netted NKU's first goal just three minutes into the game, tied the score at 2-all at the 27:04 mark by finding the back of the net with a shot that was assisted by both
Samantha Sutkamp and
Danielle Hogue.
Amanda Mason gave NKU the lead for good at the 40:01 mark with a goal off an assist from
Laura Painter.
Hogue's goal at the 50:42 mark extended NKU's advantage to 4-2, and Warndorf added her third goal of the contest in the 63rd minute off assists from Mason and Hogue to make it 5-2.
Sutkamp found the back of the net at the 72:51 mark off assists from
Kelly Sullivan and
Amie Noll to increase the Norse lead to 6-2, and Warndorf tied the NKU record with her fourth goal at the 75:23 mark to make it 7-2.
Sarah Smith capped the NKU scoring with an unassisted goal in the 89th minute.
NKU finished with a 26-8 advantage in shot attempts. The Norse outshot the Mountain Lions by a 15-3 margin in the second half.
NKU begins Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday on the road against Southern Indiana. That game will begin at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
