LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team split a doubleheader at Bellarmine on Saturday, taking a 7-5 decision in the opener and dropping the nightcap by an 8-6 score.
Pat Muth and
Brian Erie both drove in two runs to spark NKU in the first game.
Jason Cisper added two hits and scored a pair of runs for the Norse in that victory.
NKU snapped a 3-all tie in the fourth inning by scoring an unearned run, and the Norse added two more runs in the fifth to extend their advantage to 6-3. Erie's two-run single accounted for the NKU scoring in the fifth inning, and Muth added an RBI single in the sixth.
Jarrett Casey went 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win. NKU closer
Chase Stewart collected his fifth save of the season with a pair of strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Bellarmine snapped a 6-all tie in the sixth inning on an RBI double by John Lyons and held on for an 8-6 win. Samuel Robinson pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the save as the Knights handed NKU its first Great Lakes Valley Conference loss of the season.
Cisper went 3-for-5 and scored twice in the second game for NKU, which is 16-6 overall, 7-1 in the GLVC.
Jeff Bohlen and
Larry Pempek each drove in two runs for the Norse, while
Evan McDole scored twice.
Pempek and
Randy Jones had RBI singles in the first inning as NKU built a 3-0 lead, but Bellarmine countered by scoring twice in the bottom of the inning. Bellarmine used a four-run outburst in the fourth to gain a 6-3 advantage, but NKU rallied with three runs in the sixth to tie the score at 6-all.
NKU hits the road for a non-conference doubleheader at Ohio Dominican on Wednesday. The Norse return home next weekend for a four-game GLVC series with Saint Joseph's, beginning with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
