EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
Jessica Farris continued her torrid hitting Saturday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University softball team swept a doubleheader at Southern Indiana to extend its winning streak to seven games.
Farris was 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs in the opener as NKU rallied for a 6-4 victory against Southern Indiana. The sophomore shortstop, who was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week last Monday, helped the Norse storm back from a 4-1 deficit.
In the nightcap, NKU scored twice in the fifth inning to snap a 1-all tie and went on to post a 4-1 win.
Katie Sullivan drove in two runs as the Norse won their seventh consecutive game.
NKU improved to 15-8 overall, 9-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Southern Indiana is 8-14 overall, 7-3 in the GLVC.
Southern Indiana jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning in the opener, but NKU countered by plating three runs in the top of the second to tie the game. The Norse pushed across the go-ahead run in the third inning when
Jamie Raabe doubled with two outs and advanced to third on an error. Raabe then scored when an illegal pitch was called against Southern Indiana's Hadley Clark and NKU owned a 5-4 lead.
NKU added an insurance run in the fourth inning when
Emily Schwaeble drove in
Stephanie West with a run-scoring single. Norse pitcher
April Ehlers, who settled down after a shaky first inning, did not allow a run during the final six frames and picked up the victory. Ehlers recorded six strikeouts and improved to 7-5.
Rose Broderick drove in a pair of runs in the first game for NKU.
In the second game, Schwaeble remained unbeaten (5-0) by limiting Southern Indiana to just three hits and an unearned run. Tied at 1-all in the top of the fifth, NKU took advantage of two Southern Indiana errors to gain a 3-1 lead.
Ashley Gates also added an RBI single in the fifth inning.
Sullivan added a run-scoring single in the sixth to seal the win for NKU, which also swept last season's doubleheader against Southern Indiana.
NKU's doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan has been postponed due to the threat of inclement weather. The games will be made up on April 21. NKU returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Tiffin for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
