HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University softball team overcame a pair of early deficits to post a doubleheader sweep of Bellarmine in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday.
With the wins, NKU improved to 21-10 overall and 12-3 in GLVC play.
NKU received a pair of excellent pitching performances as
April Ehlers (10-6) struck out nine batters while allowing just three hits in Game 1. Game 2 saw
Chelsie Roy (5-3) surrender a run on five hits and equaled a career high with eight strikeouts in the victory.
The opener saw a shaky start for the Norse after a Megan Murdoch run-scoring double put the Knights (13-27, 6-12 GLVC) ahead in the top of the first inning. The Norse responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Rose Broderick's RBI triple to right-center field plated
Jessica Farris, who reached on an error to lead off the inning. Broderick scored two batters later on an
Ashley Gates sacrifice fly.
The lead would be short lived, however, as Murdoch struck again with a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.
Ehlers helped her own cause in the sixth inning, driving in the winning run with a single up the middle to score Broderick, who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the frame.
Game 2 saw Bellarmine again plate a run in the top of the first inning, this time on a Lauren Summe RBI single. Again, the Norse responded in the bottom half, this time on an
Emily Schwaeble sacrifice fly, scoring Farris from second base to even the score at 1-all.
Schwaeble got the offense going again for NKU in the third inning with a two-out double to right-center field. After reaching third on a wild pitch, Schwaeble scored the go-ahead run on a Gates RBI single.
Jamie Raabe went 2-for-3 with a triple at the plate.
NKU returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader at Urbana on Wednesday. Next weekend sees the Norse host Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's for a pair of key GLVC doubleheaders.
