HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play Sunday afternoon by holding on for a 2-1 victory against Southern Indiana at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
NKU (2-0 overall, 1-0 GLVC) built a 2-0 lead and held off a late Southern Indiana rally to post the win. The Norse took a 1-0 advantage into halftime thanks to an own goal provided by Southern Indiana on a failed clearance in the box just 10 minutes into the contest.
NKU extended its lead to 2-0 at the 46:45 mark when
Nicholas Chiarot stole a Southern Indiana pass, broke into the open and deposited a 20-yard shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Southern Indiana (1-1, 0-1 GLVC) countered at the 72:56 mark after a free kick by Michael Simcock hit the post and was finished off by Andrew Rosenberg on the rebound for a goal that cut NKU's lead to 2-1. The Norse defense stiffened during the final 17 minutes and held on for the victory.
NKU finished with a 22-11 edge in shot attempts. The Norse also owned a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
