Brodie Steigerwald and
Michael Bartlett each netted goals in the second half Sunday as No. 7 Northern Kentucky University survived a spirited upset attempt from winless Illinois-Springfield to pull out a 2-1 victory.
Illinois-Springfield (0-11-2 overall, 0-10-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference) owned a 1-0 lead with less than 20 minutes to go, but Steigerwald found the back of the net after a restart by
Cian McDonald to event the contest at 1-all in the 71st minute.
Bartlett gave NKU a 2-1 lead with a goal at the 76:58 mark off an assist from
Anthony Meyer. It was the fourth goal of the season for Bartlett and his second game-winning shot.
NKU – now 3-0 all-time against Illinois-Springfield - improved to 12-2 overall, 10-2 in the GLVC. The Norse also moved into first place after Indianapolis dropped a 3-1 decision to Drury on Sunday.
The Norse controlled the field virtually the entire contest and finished with a 20-4 advantage in shot attempts. NKU goalie
