KISSIMMEE, Fla. – One day removed from a 21-run onslaught, the Northern Kentucky University softball team managed just two runs in two games on Monday during a pair of losses at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
NKU dropped a 3-1 decision to Concordia-St. Paul, and later suffered a 5-1 loss to Minnesota State. NKU is now 5-7 this season.
After Concordia (7-2) scored a run in the top of the first inning, NKU threatened with bases loaded and no outs in the third inning, but the Norse could not scratch a run across. NKU stranded 10 runners in the contest.
Sami Mattson's solo home run to lead off the fourth inning gave the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead. NKU got a run back in the fifth frame with a run-scoring double by
Emily Schwaeble, but a Bekah Roth RBI double gave the Golden Bears the insurance run they needed to take the win.
Schwaeble (1-2) took the loss in the circle, giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out seven batters. She also led the offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Minnesota State (13-1) scored three times in the top of the first inning in the second game to bury the Norse early.
Jessica Farris stroked an RBI single to center-field in the fifth inning, but NKU couldn't string together the hits to mount a comeback.
April Ehlers (2-4) gave up five runs on five hits and struck out five batters in the loss for NKU. Like her counterpart in the first game, Ehlers also led the offense with a 2-for-3 game.
NKU returns to action on Wednesday afternoon with games against California (Pa.) and region foe Ferris State.
