EVANSVILLE, Ind. – An outstanding performance by relief pitcher Dan Marcacci helped Southern Indiana defeat Northern Kentucky University on Sunday afternoon.
Marcacci threw 7 1/3 innings in relief of injured starter Tyler Choate as Southern Indiana posted a 7-2 win over NKU. Marcacci scattered three hits and allowed just one run as the 16th-ranked Screaming Eagles knocked off the Norse for the third time in the four-game weekend series.
Southern Indiana, the defending NCAA Division II national champion, is 21-9 overall, 13-3 in the GLVC. NKU is 16-15, 6-10 in the GLVC.
Choate started for the Screaming Eagles, but he left in the second inning with an arm injury.
Bryan Rose gave NKU a 1-0 lead in the first with a run-scoring single off Choate that plated
Brett Cisper.
Southern Indiana, however, scored three times in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Ben Griggs keyed the third-inning outburst with a two-run triple.
The Screaming Eagles added two more runs off NKU starter
Brent Wagner in the fourth to extend their advantage to 5-1 and cruised behind the pitching of Marcacci.
Justin Blinn was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in to lead Southern Indiana. Cisper scored twice for NKU, while teammates
Brian Erie and
Brad Clement each had two hits.
NKU returns home to begin a four-game series against Saint Joseph's with a doubleheader at noon Saturday. The two teams conclude the series Sunday with another noon doubleheader.
